SAFe is a crutch. It may help you during recovery but you can't run with it

Hi Product people,

Have you ever considered how team structures might be holding back your product's success? This week on Product Thinking, I had an enlightening conversation with Matthew Skelton, co-author of "Team Topologies: Organizing Business and Technology Teams for Fast Flow."

Matthew delved into how the right team topology can dramatically improve the flow of value to your customers.

"In many organizations, it's like they haven't worked with these terms before. They realize that they really don't think about the value to the users. Team Topologies exposes any lack of clarity about mission and purpose."

Matthew shared during our discussion. We explored how aligning teams with the flow of value rather than being stuck in silos can make a pivotal difference in product delivery. Matthew provided insights on when using heavy frameworks (like SAFe) to enhance team capabilities may be a reasonable approach and when it's definitely a bad idea.

Matthew's perspective on team structures is crystal clear: it's about allowing teams to focus on delivering value by understanding and minimizing cognitive load. We talked about how Product Operations can play a key role in this.

I highly recommend tuning into this episode if you're interested in optimizing your team's workflows and breaking down silos for better software delivery.

Have you implemented team topologies in your organization? I'd love to hear your thoughts!
