Understanding Product vs Project Management

Hi Product people,

In this week’s Product Thinking podcast, I explored the nuanced roles of product management and project management. It’s a common mix-up, yet understanding their distinct contributions is key to driving product success. I discussed how these roles complement each other, with product management focusing on the 'why' and value creation, and project management ensuring the 'when' and timely delivery.

"Product management is about the why and the value creation part of it. Project management is more about the when, coordinating resources, timelines, and making sure it actually gets done."

I dived into the evolution of these roles with the rise of Agile, where teams began managing projects themselves, often blurring the lines between these two functions. However, in larger organizations with complex products, having dedicated project managers can greatly enhance coordination across multiple teams and initiatives.

This episode is packed with insights into how both roles can coexist to create more impactful product strategies. Don’t miss out and listen to the full episode for a deeper understanding!

Hello Reader, When was the last time you spent more time preparing for an internal review than talking to a customer? Not because you're lazy. Not because you don't care about customers. But because the internal systems have gotten so complex that navigating them well feels like it has become the entire job. Stakeholder alignment meetings. Quarterly planning rituals. OKR calibration sessions. Status updates for three different audiences. By the time you get through the internal maze, there's...

Hello Reader, Lately I've been reflecting on product training, as we go into our 10th year at Product Institute. I've seen so many evolutions of product management, from when we didn't even acknowledge product was a thing, to the high days of agile transformations and product owners, to now AI PMs and talk about how teams will change. Through it all, we've worked with dozens of large enterprises running digital transformations and training thousands of people at a time. There's a key...

Hello Reader, Happy New Year! I hope you had a chance to rest, reflect, and recharge. We’re back for a new year, and I’m really looking forward to continuing to support you and your teams as you navigate the challenges ahead. PMs spend too much time with Ops Last week, I shared a post that sparked a surprisingly deep reaction. PMs, product leaders, and executives all described the same pattern from different angles: talented product people burning out not because they’re weak or inefficient,...
